More than any other topic, I was most worried about writing lessons for the statistics standards in Common Core Algebra II. I’ve been a high school math teacher in New York now for 16 years. The extent I’ve taught stat has been the normal distribution in half-standard deviation increments (all you Integrated Course III teachers know what I’m saying). I taught college statistics over a decade ago at Syracuse University, but it’s been awhile. So… Read more »

Protected: Unit 4 (Linear Functions) Test – by Brett Widman
Posted onIt’s Coming – Common Core Algebra II
Posted onI’m getting there. Around 90% of the lessons and homework sets for the first draft have been written. I’m still projecting a mid-March completion of the first draft, at least to a point where I’m going to be putting it out there for the wider audience. Here’s our cover. Thanks to C. Michael Frey, our artist and founder of Frey Art and Design, visit his site to see more of his great work. Click on… Read more »
Common Core Algebra II Unit Structure
Posted onWell, the time has finally come to make it official. I’m quite a bit along on the new Common Core Algebra II book and I wanted to publish the first draft of the table of contents. This is what I refer to as a unit structure or curricular outline. It does not contain a list of the individual lessons, but it does contains the overall flow of the units and what the major topics/skills sets… Read more »
Regents Review #8 – by Brett Widman
Posted onBrett Widman, from West Seneca, sent us another great Regents Review. There are a lot of great questions on this one to help kids review domain, range, average rate of change, etcetera. Use it as a great Regents week review sheet. Thanks again, Brett. Stay warm everyone. Algebra 1 Regents Review #8
How do I do those videos?
Posted onSo, every once in a while I get an email asking how I make the videos. Instead of writing a long blog post about it, which would only confuse the situation, I have a video that explains everything I do. Check it out:
Online Calculator – Super Cool – from Kevin Hoang
Posted onKevin Hoang, a recent contributor from the sunny state of California, recently emailed me with a link to an amazing, and free, online calculator that allows you to really do some neat things. Primarily, it allows you to place generalized functions in and then have the calculator change the parameters of the equation. So, a simple example would be to have a linear function dependent on m and b graphed and then have a slider… Read more »

Posted onLinear Modeling Project – Population Growth – by Steve Weissburg
Posted onSteve Weissburg from Ithaca High School has contributed a really great linear modeling problem for Algebra I. He has students model the populations of India and China over time. Kids collect the data, create a scatter plot, draw a line of best fit, come up with slopes, units, etcetera. Eventually, they predict the year in which India’s population overcomes China’s. To put it mildly, this is a great project. If you want a performance based… Read more »
