Unit #4 - Radicals and The Quadratic Formula

Home | e-Texts | Resources | Products | Philosophy | Feedback | Links

Square roots continue to play an important role in mathematics, although the use of the calculator suggests that we still spend too much time on this topic.  This unit seeks to review and expand the student's ability to manipulate square root expressions.  It utilizes these skills in solving incomplete quadratic equations.  Completing the square is used to create incomplete quadratics, eventually giving way to the Quadratic Formula.  Through the formula students are exposed the universal facts about the sum and product of the roots of a quadratic equation.   These facts are then used to create quadratic equations. Finally, fractional powers are developed with their equivalence to roots firmly established.
